Question

I am presently looking for a new career path. I feel like I have a solid educational background. I hold a BA in liberal arts with a major in human development from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. I also have an associate's degree in science, with an attached medical licensure as a physical therapist assistant. I have been employed as a therapist for the public school system for 11 years and I work after school as an enrichment science teacher for a grant-funded program.

I love people and am very team-oriented. My new project as a volunteer is campaigning for the primaries and general Democratic election. I find it very interesting and would like to pursue a career in this area or something related, as I find it very dynamic. Do you have any ideas for me?

I look forward to hearing your ideas,

Jennifer Stern

Answer

Dear Ms. Stern:

You can go into politics from a variety of backgrounds--the qualities you need most are intelligence, motivation and dedication. There are plenty of people in politics, both in office and behind the scenes, who have the same kind of liberal arts background that you do. Websites like PolitixGroup.com list volunteer and job opportunities in many areas, and if you're campaigning for the Democrats, check out political action groups like MoveOn.org and blogs like DailyKos. Look for opportunities at your Senator's and Representative's offices. To improve your desirability as a job applicant, you might take a couple of online courses on political science, current affairs, foreign policy or economics, just to get up to speed.

You might also consider running for office on your local city council. This is a great way to get experience in the political arena and make a difference in your community at the same time.

Best of luck to you.
