What are the "Liberal Arts & Humanities"?The term 'Liberal Arts' historically comes from studies "appropriate for free men," i.e., the citizens of the republics of classical antiquity who were never expected to train directly for any given trade or pursuit. They received a generalized education thought to be most proper for the social and political elites. As such, the course of study in the "liberal arts" was almost entirely devoted to the classics - arts, literature, rhetoric, and philosophy.In the history of education, the seven liberal arts comprise two groups of studies, the trivium and the quadrivium. Grammar, rhetoric, and dialectic (or logic) make up the trivium. The quadrivium consists of the studies of arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music. These liberal arts made up the core curriculum of the medieval universities. Colloquially, however, the term 'liberal arts' has come to mean studies intended to provide general knowledge and intellectual skills, rather than occupational or professional skills. The scope of the liberal arts has changed with society. Later, the "liberal arts" broadened to encompass study in the humanities more generally. The "Humanities" are a group of academic subjects united by a commitment to studying aspects of the human condition and a qualitative approach that generally prevents a single paradigm from coming to define any discipline. In academia, the humanities are generally considered to be, along with the social sciences and the natural sciences, one of three major components of the liberal arts and sciences. Today, the liberal arts are sometimes promoted as "liberal" in the later Enlightenment sense, as liberating of the mind, removing prejudices and unjustified assumptions. In spite of the term's original medieval meaning, this is treated by some today as the central meaning of the term. A degree in liberal arts and humanities is not a business degree. It's not a science degree or a technical certificate. Yet, the coursework you do and the skills you develop can be applied to virtually any profession. The focus on communication skills; the ability to learn in the abstract; solving problems through reasoning, logic and deduction; open debating; and the study of how it all fits within historical and cultural contexts - makes an art and humanities degree an eye opening experience and one you will always carry with you. From a professional standpoint, the arts and humanities degree gives you the skills and discipline to work in any variety of careers; to transition easily into a professional track like medicine or law; or to go onto graduate school. |
