Interior Design

Interior decorators generate particular themes or ambiance in homes, businesses, and public buildings though the aesthetic use of colors, furniture, lighting, and accessories. If you are talented in design, possess a keen sense of what looks pleasing to the eye, and have a good understanding of how to use space effectively, a career in interior decorating may be something you should consider. Interior decorating isn't as easy as it is sometimes presented on popular television reality shows. It takes hard work, specialized knowledge, and a strong desire to create unique and pleasing environments. You can obtain the necessary education to become an interior decorator by enrolling in a design center, university, or online college.

Career Training and Degrees in Interior Decorating

Obtaining a degree, especially a bachelor's degree program in interior design is highly recommended to qualify for entry level interior design and decorating positions. Students who graduate from a two- or three-year program receive certificates or associate's degrees and usually qualify to be assistants to interior decorators upon graduation. If you continue on to get your BA in interior decorating, you may qualify for an apprenticeship program in design.

Apprenticeship programs generally last from one to three years. During this time, interior designers and decorators work in design or architecture firms under the supervision of a senior designer. These programs serve to help entry level interior decorators gain valuable hands-on experience and can assist in opening career advancement. Hiring managers often prefer or require the training that comes with an interior decorating certificate or diploma.

Interior Decorating

Joining various interior decorating organizations can help you to establish alliances and contacts from within the industry. Members of these professional establishments report that clients respond favorably to interior decorators who are recognized as certified interior designers.

Online Interior Decorating Degrees

Online diploma programs in interior decorating focus on the basics of choosing proper color palettes and the appropriate selection of furniture and textiles, floor and window coverings, artwork, and lighting. More advanced courses can cover the technical side of interior decorating such as blueprint reading and computer-aided design (CAD) software. CAD programs are become increasingly popular to help interior decorators visualize and plan their layouts. Representations of interiors can be manipulated and changed "virtually" at the click of a button. As a result, interior decorators should be familiar with computer design software and how it functions.

Interior Decorating and the Job Market

New jobs for interior designers and decorators are expected to increase faster than average when compared to other occupations from 2008 through 2016. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a strong demand for interior decorators in hospitality businesses such as hotels, vacation resorts, and restaurants. Demand for kitchen and bathroom design specialists is also expected to be high as home remodeling becomes increasingly popular. The average annual income of interior designers and decorators is $50,190.
