Going Green with an Online Degree
As the reality of climate change sinks in around the globe, more and more Americans are looking for ways to reduce their own carbon footprints without drastically altering their standards of living. WorldWideLearn.com reports on one solution that not only uses 90% less energy than its traditional counterpart--but, unlike most conservation strategies, actually makes the user's life more convenient.

(PRWeb) - January 07, 2008--WorldWideLearn.com, the world's premier online education directory, has published a new article titled "Nine Ways to Save the World with Your College Degree." The featured article reveals the environmental benefits associated with online education.

Though little research has yet been done on this topic in the U.S., a number of European organizations have already released studies quantifying the environmental impact of the higher education sector and establishing the "potential of the Internet and other elearning methods to radically reduce energy consumption and emissions," according to the WorldWideLearn.com article.

The Stockholm Environmental Institute and the UK's Open University Design Innovation Group found that, compared to traditional campus college courses, distance learning courses:

  • Consumed nearly 90% less energy
  • Produced 85% fewer CO2 emissions
These energy reductions included:
  • A 92% reduction in travel-related environmental impact
  • A nearly 50% reduction in paper and print consumption
"For the first time, students have the opportunity to make an environmental impact while at same time receiving a high-quality educational experience," says WorldWideLearn spokesman Doug Jones. "Conserving natural resources is only the tip of the iceberg. An online education program also enables students to strengthen global communities and build awareness of environmental responsibilities."

WorldWideLearn.com is the world's premier online directory of education, featuring informative resources, more than 2,500 online courses, over 1,600 online degree programs, 200 online universities and 2,300 campus-based career college programs. WorldWideLearn.com receives millions of visitors anaully and has been featured on MSMoney.com.
