University of Liverpool Western Governors University | IT, Business and Education Degrees

Western Governors University (WGU) is America's only online, competency-based university. Unlike traditional universities, WGU does not award degrees based on a given number of credit hours or a certain set of courses; instead, WGU awards degrees to students demonstrating skills and knowledge through a series of assessments. These typically include tests, projects and a portfolio. WGU was founded and is supported by 19 states and governors, as well as 25 leading corporations and foundations. It is accredited both nationally and by four regional commissions. WGU offers bachelor's and master's degrees in three areas: IT, business and education.

In June 2002, Western Governors University (WGU) partnered with World Wide Learn to spread the word about America's first online, competency-based university.

Western Governors University "We decided to use the services of WorldWideLearn.com because they exclusively feature online courses," says Pat Partridge, vice president of marketing for Western Governors University. "As a result, it's a safe bet to say that students exploring WorldWideLearn.com are already interested in pursuing e-learning in some form. This means that by the time a lead reaches WGU that person is already familiar with the medium and are open to this type of learning methodology."

Another aspect of WorldWideLearn.com that made it attractive to WGU is the fact that WorldWideLearn is very selective about which universities it invites to appear on its directory. Not only is accreditation imperative, 'diploma mills' are completely shut out of the site.

"We like our name to appear on directories alongside other credible institutions," says Partridge. "Online learning is quickly becoming mainstream, and credibility issues have diminished. However, they haven't completely gone away. By building relationships with respected organizations like World Wide Learn, WGU has the opportunity to reinforce its position as a quality education provider."

In the fall of 2003, WGU had 1,300 distance learning students. Enrollment continues to grow at a steady clip of approximately 200 students per month.

"We partnered with WorldWideLearn in 2001, and they have become one of our most valuable partners," says Min Ye, co-founder and executive director of Business Development for Sessions.edu. "They share our commitment to excellence, and are a leading global advocate for online learning.

"We have found that too many other online directories populate their sites with unwanted ads and irrelevant information," continues Ye. When considering partnering with an online directory, Ye recommends that e-learning providers take a close look at WorldWideLearn's ease of use and extensive databank of learning information. "We haven't seen any other e-learning directory that even comes close to WorldWideLearn," says Ye. "It is highly organized, and it is really amazing how much is featured on the site.
